Two devastating traffic accidents on the Kabul-Kandahar highway have claimed the lives of at least 52 people and left 65 others injured. The incidents, which occurred on one of Afghanistan’s busiest and most perilous roads, have plunged the nation into mourning.
The first accident occurred early Wednesday morning near Ghazni province when a passenger bus collided head-on with a fuel tanker. The resulting explosion engulfed both vehicles in flames, leaving charred remains and killing at least 30 individuals on the spot. Emergency services faced significant challenges in recovering the bodies due to the intensity of the fire.
Hours later, a second crash occurred near Zabul province, involving a speeding minibus and a truck carrying construction materials. The collision resulted in 22 fatalities and left dozens critically injured. Residents and first responders rushed to the scene to transport the wounded to nearby hospitals.
Eyewitnesses reported that reckless driving, combined with poor road conditions, likely contributed to the tragic incidents. Survivors recounted harrowing tales of chaos and despair as they struggled to escape the wreckage.
