A coal mine in the Khak Sefid area of Lower Dara Soof district, Samangan province, collapsed on Saturday evening, December 14, leaving 35 miners trapped beneath the rubble.
Local Taliban officials reported that search and rescue operations are underway to locate and free the miners, but they remain unaccounted for at this time. The collapse occurred around 6 p.m., marking another tragic incident in Afghanistan’s mining sector.
This disaster follows a recent accident in the Sayghan district of Bamyan province, where two miners lost their lives due to a gas leak in a coal mine in the village of Khaja Ganj.
Afghanistan’s mining sector has long been plagued by inadequate safety measures and insufficient equipment, leading to frequent accidents and loss of life. The latest collapse underscores the urgent need to improve safety protocols and protect the lives of miners working under perilous conditions.
Rescue efforts continue as authorities and local residents race against time to save the trapped miners. As the operation progresses, further updates are expected.
